Nikki N had a GREAT idea here and I agree that this is long overdue.

As many of us have known for years now, Las Vegas restaurants and choices are getting so amazing lately that I dare say it is now only rivaled by NYC and L.A. ....... maybe. It's time for some of us to share their favorites...and worst for that matter.

Hopefully this thread develops into a credible place to come for research on good eats in Sin City.

The first post is a great one, originally posted by PrtyPSux in an earlier thread today, so I am going to re post it here.

(btw you can check out his blog btw @ http://jcalvarado.com/blog.php?comment=post&id=42 )

QUOTE
Hungry in Vegas?
Posted on January 29, 2008

I read a little bit of Paul Wasicka’s blog a long time ago and since I have absolutely nothing poker related to write about I figured I'd steal one of his blog ideas and make a little review of my top 10 favorite Vegas restaurants, god knows there's plenty to choose from. Also, I have unbelievably good taste so you better take my advice pretty damn seriously when it comes to this stuff. I didn't gain 20 pounds in Vegas for nothing. I obviously haven’t been to all, I still have a few on my “oh my god you have to try that” list that friends recommend, but for now these are my favorites. Keep in mind some places have better food but I might rate something higher because of the location, or the hours, being open at 3 am is a HUGE plus in my books.

Here it goes:

10. Noodles at Bellagio.

If you're staying at bellagio and want something a little more fast and casual than Fix or any of many restaurants in the hotel, this is by far the best place to go. I call in and order to go on a regular basis so I can eat some noodles at my house. Try the Pork Buns and the Sesame Chicken.

9. Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay

If you're looking for an insane Burger and a pitcher of beer and you're not afraid to drop some money for a a piece of meat between some bread, this is the place to go. I've only been there twice, if you're feeling insane you can try the Kobe burger with Foie Gras and shaved truffles. I'm all about paying for good food but I don't think I'll be spending $60 on a burger again, it felt like I was slapping a starving kid in the face with a Japanese imported steak. For less than half the price and twice the flavor get the Surf and Turf, it‘s unbelievable.

If that doesn’t make your mouthwater then I don’t know what will..

8. Bonito Michoacan.

Off the strip is always nice, when I'm feeling like I need something to remind me of home I always drive 5 minutes away and order the “Queso Fundido” as the appetizer, a Bohemia Beer, and a nice main course. It's not as good as something you'll have in Mexico but it's the closest I've had here in Vegas. It's also great for hangovers, I go there on almost a weekly basis.

7. Spago at Caesar’s Palace

I’m pretty sure it’s mentioned on “Entourage” every other episode. If that won’t convince you to go, Maybe Wolfgang Puck himself can.

6. Naked Fish’s

If I get a text message from Steve Sung that says “yo are you in Vegas?” I know the very next one will say “Lets go eat at Naked Fish” . Very good sushi, Very good service and a huge plus for being off the strip. Number 6 and 5 can definitely be swapped, both have their up sides.

5. Kaizen Sushi

Great Sushi……open till 4 am daily ……Happy hour from 12-4 am……need I say more?

4. FireFly Tapas Kitchen

I’ve been there once and it’s already one of my favorite places. It got points for being off the strip, being open late, Trendy, hot girls, good Spanish music, and good food……oh and you can get pitchers of Mojito….take a cab, I’m glad I did.

3. Japonais at Mirage

I’m sure by now you can tell I love sushi, this place is great, kind of expensive but order their best bottle of Sake and you won’t care.

2. Craftsteak at MGM

OMG. Expensive as ****, but by far the best steak house I’ve ever been to. It wins the prize for best Lobster Bisque I’ve ever had and for best Kobe beef I’ve ever had. Go with friends, Roulette for the bill and pray to the god that you don’t lose. Thanks Tom ;-) .

1. FIX and Stack…..the combo

I had a tough time deciding what the best restaurant I’ve been to was, so I decided that instead of ranking Stack in sixth and FIX at number one or two I’d just list the two sister restaurants as number 1, because two is always better than one right? FIX is at Bellagio and the other at Mirage, FIX get’s a 10 in in food, atmosphere, class, service and in location. Right next to the poker room makes it a favorite amongst poker players when the day ends in a tournament or when you’re celebrating your final table. Best appetizers on earth, often you won’t have room for a main course. If you’re still hungry for desert you can stuff your face with the sickest doughnuts ever. As for Stack, it looks just like fix, but the menu is a bit different, appetizers are still the best thing they have try the hot rock or the tiny hot dogs, really good stuff. Unfortunately the two times I went there the service was terrible. It takes the prize for smallest tip I’ve ever left in a restaurant, but I‘m sure she enjoyed her dollar. Aside from that, the food is awesome in both restaurants and you’ll definitely love them.

Quick honorable mentions:

-24/7 Café at Palms has the best spinach and artichoke dip I’ve ever had, that alone makes it worth visiting.

-RM Seafood at Mandalay is very very good.

-Shinatro at Bellagio, you’ll be missed….If it hadn’t closed down a month or two ago I’d have it in my top 3, the place was awesome. On the plus side the owners of FIX are putting a “FIX” style sushi restaurant that I’m almost positive will blow away any sushi restaurant there is….I cant wait.

Anyway, If you’re in town now you know where to go, enjoy and send me some recommendations if you’ve had something better.

JC

PS- If you happen to manage or own one of these restaurants and want to give me free meals for the plug, I’ll gladly take them. Thanks in advance.

Please pot your favorites here. I know I have been to so many great

I couldn't agree more with many of these picks and will add mine when I get a list together.

Happy eating folks!

Beef and cheddar is often my casino drive home meal. Awesome.

edit: ok here are a few that I try not to miss when in town there (Ill edit this often as we find new places that we like)

In and Out burgers always rule.

Terrace Pointe Cafe at the Wynn. Great breakfast.

Red 8 at the Wynn (asian).

Mesa Grill at Caesars

Noodle Asia at Venetian

kokomos at Mirage

Nobu at Hard Rock

Little Buddha, Palms

Ni9e, Palms

Food court, just as you're leaving Caesars and about to enter the mall. The burger option there is very good.

You are SUCH a giving human. We are lucky to be included in your species!!!!

But I also like the Chili Cheese dogs at The Orleans. Hot dogs steamed in beer are GOOD!!!
specbrad
Delmonico (Emeril's Steakhouse @ Venetian).

We eat there every trip to Vegas, without fail.

Little Buddha (Chinese @ The Palms).

Great food, great atmosphere!

Eat there alot as well.

I have ate at exactly 0 of JC's restraunt list. I did eat at Wolfgang Pucks restraunt at the MGM but not sure how close that is to the Spago menu.

My faves

Emerils N.O. Fishouse at the MGM grand. Have eaten here several times and have always been satisfied. I have had the crabcakes, barbecue shrimp, grilled fish. My favorite menu item is the seafood pan roast, its a seafood jambalya with 2 medalions of blackened fish on top. The lobster bisque is also incredible here. The bananna cream pie is pretty much the best dessert you will ever have.

Mesa Grill at Caesars. Only been once but it was also very good. The southwest flavors in his food are so good.

In n out. If you dont have one near you a stop at one in Vegas is always mandatory.

Best buffet imo is Planet Hollywoods Spice Market. Wynns Breakfast spread is fantastic but $20(I have also had the dinner but was dissapointed.

Grand Luxe is the best 24 hour joint on the strip. The prices for what you get is outstanding considering its in a 5 star resort and about 1.5 minute walk from my favorite Vegas pokerroom.

A little out of the way, but Sazio @ The Orleans FTW.

Hugo's Cellar at the Four Queens (Downtown Las Vegas) is the best restaurant I've ever eaten in. The food is phenomenal, the service impeccable, and the prices reasonable. You can beat one or two in Vegas, but not all three. My wife and I have gone there during both of our stays in Vegas, and I expect we'll go there every time we go for the rest of our days. My favorite dish is the Hot Rock Specialty Plate, it's chicken, shrimp, beef and swordfish cooked and served at the table on a hot slab of granite. Very cool, very tasty.

I also had dinner with my wife at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant (Paris, obv), and it was an outstanding meal, but also the most expensive meal for two I've ever encountered (not counting the $50 I dropped on two glasses of champagne, the total bill was around $300). Still, you get one of the best views in Vegas to go with your meal, and the service and food were outstanding.

Most of the other places I've been to eat were throwaways, haven't really had the whole "Vegas culinary experience" since my wife and I would both prefer to be gambling our money than spending it on food for the most part. Not into sushi, and she's not into seafood at all which kinda limits the menus in Vegas. I'm still looking to eat at some of the premier steakhouses out there, but I have another 40 years of Vegas trips to fit that into the itinerary.
Ouch-8s
In and Out was a pretty decent fast food burger, but it didn't quite live up to the hype. Great shake though.

Prime was a damn good meal, and it had better be too, it was pricey.

Nothing else was remarkable that I remember. Next time I promise to try the beer, beans. PROMISE.
freak2304
Subway @ the 4 Queens.
bdc30
Anyone know the name of the place at Wynn that's at the bottom of the curved escalator with the patio out back looking out at the waterfall? That place pwns souls too.
AAsnake88
I am a huge fan of Emeril's fish house...I've ordered the tasting menu every time and never been diaappointed.

The noodle bar at venetian is another favorite...they have some weird stuff on the menu and I haven't been through it all as yet, so I'm going to keep going until I taste all of it.

Gallagher's at NYNY...by far the best steak I've had and their sides are incomperable. (get the cowboy steak...bone in ribeye so you can get back to your neanderthal roots).
troyomac
I can't wait to try these steak houses!

I love Ruth's Chris, Firefly (Thanks Seth!), and Sonic was absolutely wonderful for fast food!

In and Out's fries are terrible IMO.
MJINK3
I eat at The Burger Bar at least once a trip. It's that good.
silkyjonson
I liked Mesa grill when i was there, and I really can't wait to hit firefly when I go next have heard a lot about that place and I love Latin steak houses Argentinian usually being the best from experience.
rivergirl
i do mainly buffets while i'm in vegas, mainly because it's faster than waiting for an entire meal and when we go our schedules are usually really, really tight. I have had the opportunity for a few "nicer" meals while there. Inside the Riviera (which is where we stay b/c of the pool tourney we go to) is this little Italian restaurant. The food is actually really good and it has a very cozy, romantic atmosphere. Since it's on the "bottom" end of the strip, it's a bit out of the way, but IMO worth checking out. The prices are a little high, but still reasonable for vegas meal.
I love the buffet at the Bellagio, if nothing else there, the dessert bar is definately worth the cheesecake experience alone.

And QFT: Breakfast sandwich. or sunday night pasta.

also, Terrace point at wynn is 24 hours, I eat there or grandluxe like 4 times a week. and have never been dissapointed.

I also liked firefly

and I know there are a few other great restaurants at Venetian, but i havent had a chance to hit them up yet.
Zach6668
I haven't been to many places in Vegas, but I'll list my favorites anyways:

Grand Lux Cafe @ Venetian

Basically, this place is amazing for the 4 am dinner, for $12. I'm not a penny pincher by any means, but you can't beat the value here. They have a HUGE selection, a wide variety of foods, and it's all very tasty.

Noodles @ Bellagio

One of my mandatory stops on any Vegas trip. I love the Pad Thai. I'll have to start trying some of the other stuff on the menu this summer, though.

Deli @ MGM

Just for a quick sandwich, this is the place to go if you're on the south strip. It's also 5 seconds from the poker room, which is nice.

The Pizza Place @ NYNY

New York style pizza, in Vegas.

==============

Like I sid, I haven't really been to too many restaurants in Vegas, I'm usually just grabbing something quick, but these places are my defaults if I'm in the area.

I've got a big list of places to go, from this thread, for June, though.
ajs510
Sometimes I wish I lived in Vegas.

Usually when I'm hungry or when I wish I could roll out of bed on a Saturday and go play poker without having to drive 4 hours.

When I was on my 8th day there in September though, all I could think about was being ready to go back home though, so I guess I just wish there were cheaper, shorter flights from Rochester so I could make weekend trips whenever I wanted.

Seriously.

My buddy lives in Toronto, and we were looking for cheaper flights, and Rochester's (or maybe it was Buffalo) prices were ridic, with like 7 layovers.

From Thunder Bay, if I drive 3.5 hours into MN, I get an $89 flight direct to Vegas.

I've priced flights from Windsor>Toronto>Vegas, as well as just driving to TO and OMG Canadian flights to Vegas are ridiculously priced. Last time i looked at it (it's been a year and a half or so) it was like $1100 CA to fly from Canada. I regularly get round trip from Detroit for $200 US and that is during the May holiday season and on specific dates. It's definately considerably cheaper, regardless of drive time. Mind you I only live about 1/2 hour from the Detroit airport, but with bridge crossing and customs it can equate to a much longer time. Definately worth it IMO. I would even be willing to drive an extra 4 hours to do so.
Zach6668
How far is Detroit/Windsor from Toronto?

My gf applied to college in Windsor, I may end up down there next year.

==========================

Also, I wanted to mention that Earl of Sandwich @ Planet Hollywood is fantastic. I dunno if it's a chain I should know about, or what, but I enjoyed it very much during the drunken FCP 2/4 HORSE games, TWICE.

i will have to def agree that craft steak is the best steakhouse in vegas, the kobe beef filet was outstanding, i think the fact it was free somehow made it taste better

Top 5 places I've actually been to.

5. In-N-Out (Why won't they move east?)

4. FireFly (Best tapas I've had hands down)

3. StripSteak at Manaday Bay (Get the mashed potato trio, mmmm)

2. Mesa Grill (<3 me some Bobby Flay)

1. Tao (Amazing asian fusion, you can get sushi or an amazing steak, or both like I do. It's delicious... and don't forget the Tao-Tini)

Toronto is not that far from Detroit, about 3.5 hours, longer in crappy weather, etc.

And QFT Earl of Sandwich. Real good.

(also honorable mention to one of my all time favorite and regularly visited upscale chains, P F Changs, also at Planet Hollywood. Mongolian beef, FTW!)

I went all of last year without eating any meat. I started eating steak and chicken this year. After reading another thread about In-n-Out, I got a craving for an In-n-Out burger.

I stopped Sunday at 4 PM and ordered the #1 combo meal (double-double with fries and a coke). The first half of the burger was fantastic. The second half was kinda gross. I choked the whole thing down and I have had a belly ache since. It's been over 36 hours and I haven't been able to eat anything!

My belly still feels like it does right after Thanksgiving dinner.

I should have ordered it without the secret sauce.

And it wasn't the burger, it was the fact that your stomach was so used to not eating that kinda food.

They probably wont ever go any farther east because they have a thing against freezers

I am hoping we don't I guess it depends on what time we get there. I am hoping to get there early enough so I can have a nice sit down meal somewhere and play some poker but it all depends on what time we leave and how many times we stop. We are planning on driving straight through from Minnesota on our way to California.

Dan Marino's at Hooters isn't bad.

If you like ribs, they have all you can eat Baby Backs for $16.99.

It's also right across the street from the restaurants at MGM.

Some thoughts:

High End dining experience:

1) Hugo's in basement of Four Queens. First experience there may have been one of the top five dining experiences we have ever had. Food, service, everything you could every want and more (my wife also thought server was especially hot). Second visit had an OK experience, have not been back in couple years.

2) The Steakhouse at Camelot (Excalibur). Time in and time out the most consistantly very good experience we have had, probable ate their 20-25 times. Service is outstanding (ask for Greg, best single server we have ever had). Crabcake's are the best and have never had a bad piece of meat. If it is slow, ask server (if Greg) if he can do baked alaska for dessert when you sit down. (Not on their menu, but on menu at Prime Rib house next door and Greg will go get the cart and do it, if not overly busy and you ask at beginning of meal.) The presentation is worth it. Do not go there if looking for quick meal, but worth it to sit down and have a dining experience. Not as big of a name as many of the other high end steakhouse (or as big of a price) But food and service compare.

Good sit down meals

1) The cheesecake factory (Ceasar's). If there is something you want, they will have it on their menu. Great for a very nice lunch. Try to hit off times, or you will be in for hour + wait.

2) The Cafe in Paris. One this list for one reason - Seafood Crepes - serivce not alway great, but these crepes are worth the wait.

Avoid -

Rainforest cafe in MGM - not even sure if it still there, but go if you like: a long wait in line, while they go through people behind you and offer VIP seating for a charge, bad service (I think the server is still looking for the beverage refill I asked for 2 years ago), very average food and very above average pricing.

One the fly

1) Fish stand in food court of New York, New York. Name exscapes me right now, but fresh made to order fish and chips and great clam chowder.

Buffet

1) Mandalay Bay - A little priy, but if you are going to do a buffet, the best we have had (Have not eaten at Bellagio or Wynn, so they may be better)

Avoid

Buffet at Excalibur - may be the biggest, but not best. Everything including the Prime Rib (Roast Beef in disguise) is always overcooked.

Good post.

But you should venture north sometimes, lol. Just noticed a trend.

Will be in Vegas in 28 days (countdown has began). Will be in lockdown mode for NCAA tourny Thursday - Sunday, heading downtown Wednesday night and show at Wynn Sunday night. Suggestions for a nice dinner Sunday night before show at Wynn and a casual pre-drunk base building meal downtown for Wednesday?

PS: Been to Vegas during almost every sporting event you can imagine, Super Bowl, World Series (with The Tigers Playing), NFL Sundays, but NOTHING compairs to the first 4 days of the NCAA Basketball tourny. 4 days - 48 games - none poker players flooding the poker rooms at night becasue they saw how easy it look on ESPN. HEAVEN BABY!!!

Also, lvpro should have to post places he ate at in Vegas, so you all will not end up like him and taking an earlier flight home cause your tummy hurts.

If you are looking for a sandwich shop off the strip try Capriottis. The Capastromi pwns. When I was working out there for 3 weeks I think we got lunch from there 6 or 7 times.

We had a good meal at Red Square at Mandalay Bay a few years back. Wasn't all that crowded and the Vodka was good.
